The 22 Hottest Restaurants in LA Right Now

Restaurant obsessives want to know what’s new, what’s hot, which favorite chef just launched a sophomore effort.

1 Howlin’ Ray’s

Nashville hot chicken is officially here in Los Angeles, with Johnny Ray Zone bringing the spicy fried chicken variant to the heart of Chinatown. Get there early as the lines form nearly at opening.

727 N Broadway #128
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 935-8399

2 Moruno

A Spanish-tinted eatery has taken over the former Short Order by two Mozza vets. Though the window’s still open, this full service eatery has everything from house made gin & tonics to their own brand of vermouth to skewers, lamb sandwiches, whole fish seared on the plancha, and an incredible crispy chicharrone.

6333 W 3rd St
Los Angeles, CA 90036

3 Kali

Kevin Meehan and Drew Langley have brought a refined sensibility to this section of Melrose nearby Larchmont, with composed plates in a minimalist space. Does LA deserve such a nice, grown up restaurant right now? No one’s complaining.

5722 Melrose Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90038
(323) 871-4160

4 Highland Park Bowl

The former Mr T’s Bowl has been completely remodeled into one of the most stunning new spaces in Los Angeles, with a completely pre-Prohibition feel and cocktails to boot. The menu’s on the simpler side, helmed by wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas.

5621 N Figueroa St
Los Angeles, CA 90042
(323) 257-2697

5 Salt’s Cure

Longtime West Hollywood restaurant Salt’s Cure has found a new residence in Hollywood in the old Ammo space. With a strong commitment to using top quality meats and seasonal ingredients, it’s a worthy replacement for the previous tenant.

1155 Highland Blvd
Los Angeles, CA

6 The Cannibal

New York’s lauded butcher and restaurant has finally landed inside Culver City’s Platform project. While the butcher shop serves sandwiches and to-go items by day, the larger space prepares seasonal, chef-driven meat and vegetables dishes that would please a crowd.

8850 Washington Blvd
Culver City, CA 90232
(310) 838-2783

7 Norah

This beautifully designed space in West Hollywood is the hottest place to dine along Santa Monica Blvd since Connie & Ted’s opened a few years back. With a polished, but playful New American fare coming out of the kitchen, plus stellar cocktails, it’s the “it” WeHo restaurant of the moment.

8279 Santa Monica Blvd
West Hollywood, CA 90046
(323) 450-4211

8 Amboy

Alvin Cailan, who founded Eggslut, has a great takeout window in Chinatown that features an affordable set of Filipino fare. Try the whole pompano and pair it with some grilled vegetables for a light, but satisfying, lunch.

727 N Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 537-0053

9 Sawyer

This bright, airy Silver Lake restaurant marks the return of Beau Laughlin. The menu’s easy-going and filled with fresh seafood. And that back patio might be the best new place to hang out on the Eastside.

Santa Monica, CA 90401
(424) 744-8671

(323) 424-7735

(323) 544-9430

14 Officine Brera

This Italian meat-based restaurant has a strong grill program offering steaks, fish, and more to a swanky, wealthy-looking clientele. The risottos and rustic Italian grains that come on the side might even be better than the mains. One of the few places in LA where you won’t feel out of place in a power suit.

1331 E 6th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90021
(213) 553-8006

15 Kogi Taqueria

Roy Choi’s popular taco truck finally has a standalone brick & mortar in Palms, the neighborhood he left when Chego moved over to Chinatown a few years ago. But it’s good to have Choi back in the neighborhood, as ravenous Westsiders form lines from opening to close for Korean-style tacos and burritos.

3500 Overland Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90034
(424) 326-3031

16 Winsome

This terrific all-day restaurant tucked away in Echo Park is the most stylish place to open on the Eastside in the long time. For breakfast, have a smoked salmon-topped potato pancake while a solid burger comes through at lunch. Just be sure to wear your hipster best.

1115 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 415-1818

20 Maré

Los Angeles, CA 90012

22 Shibumi

Mapped: the sites of LA's Olympic bid

Mapped: the sites of LA’s Olympic bid

Yesterday, LA 2024, the organization spearheading Los Angeles’s push for the 2024 Olympic games, revealed impressive renderings of the LA Memorial Coliseum and USC’s Dedeaux Field as they would appear if the city wins its bid for the games.

LA faces tough competition for hosting responsibilities—the city is up against Paris, Rome, and Budapest. In June, leaders of the Paris bid unexpectedly arrived in LA and began scoping out the competition. The French capital hasn’t hosted a summer games since 1924; LA has hosted the games twice since then.

Still, LA 2024 has presented a compelling plan for the games that shows how uniquely equipped the city is for hosting such a complex, international event. All of the venues that LA 2024 has proposed for use in the games exist already or will be complete long before 2024. The map below details most of the key sites of LA’s bid.
1 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
The venerable Coliseum has already hosted Olympic events twice—in 1932 and 1984. If LA should win its bid for the 2024 games, the Olympic cauldron built for the ’32 games will burn once more. The stadium, which will celebrate its hundredth birthday in 2023, is set to host track and field events, along with the opening and closing ceremonies.

2 Dedeaux Field

LA 2024 has an ambitious plan to turn USC’s baseball stadium into a temporary swimming facility. Meanwhile, the nearby Uytengsu Aquatics Center, which hosted swimming events during the ’84 games, will be used as a training facility.
3 Galen Center (GEC)
The arena that houses USC’s basketball and volleyball teams will be used for two highly underrated Olympic sports: badminton and taekwondo.
4 Los Angeles Convention Center
LA 2024 has big plans for the convention center, selecting it to host competition in boxing, wrestling, table tennis, judo, fencing, and handball.
5 Staples Center
Should any Lakers or Clippers make the USA basketball team in 2024 (Brandon Ingram?), they’ll feel right at home competing at the Staples Center, where men’s and women’s basketball games will be held.
6 Los Angeles City Hall
Earlier this year, LA hosted Olympic trials for runners hoping to compete in the marathon in Rio de Janiero. If the city is awarded the 2024 games, City hall will provide a dramatic backdrop for the marathon and cycling events as the course winds its way through Downtown LA.
7 The Forum
Back in business and newly repainted, the Forum—which hosted basketball games during the 1984 games—will be the place to go for gymnastics if LA succeeds in its bid.
8 Rose Bowl
Along with the Coliseum, the Rose Bowl also hosted events during the 1932 and 1984 Olympic games. As in ’84, the stadium will host soccer matches.
9 LA Football Club Stadium
Once slated for swimming, LA 2024 has decided the future home of the Los Angeles Football Club will instead join the Rose Bowl in hosting soccer matches if the city gets the games.
10 Griffith Park
Beyond serving as the backdrop for an endless series of blimp shots of the Griffith Observatory, the beloved park would also host golfing competition if the city is awarded the games.
11 Microsoft Theatre
The 7,000-seat theatre formerly known as Nokia will provide a comfortable, climate-controlled setting for spectators to take in some good old fashioned weightlifting.
12 Santa Monica Beach
Arguably LA County’s most internationally recognized beach, Santa Monica is set to host beach volleyball, open water swimming, and the aquatic portion of the triathalon.
13 Pauley Pavilion
The Pauley Pavillion, where UCLA plays its home basketball and volleyball games, will host volleyball in its less scantily-clad indoor form. Meanwhile, field hockey competition will be held at the nearby North Athletic Field.
14 Los Angeles Tennis Center
LA 2024 has chosen UCLA’s world class tennis center as an ideal spot for rugby competition. Just kidding. It’ll host tennis matches, obviously.
15 UCLA Student Housing
It’ll be dorm living for the athletes competing in 2024 if LA wins its bid. UCLA’s student housing facilities have been selected for the always-collegiate Olympic Village. Meanwhile, USC’s campus across town will serve as the media village.
16 StubHub Center
Carson’s Stubhub Stadium will host rugby, while tennis, track cycling, and BMX events will be held at adjacent facilities in the sprawling athletic complex.
17 Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex
Equestrians, marksmen (and markswomen), and canoers will all head to this LA River-adjacent sports complex in Encino for their respective events.
18 LA Waterfront
The nation’s busiest port will provide a dramatic backdrop for competition in sailing.
19 Lake Casitas
You’ll have to head pretty far outside the city to see rowing and canoe sprints. LA 2024 proposes holding those events at Lake Casitas in Ventura County.
20 Santa Monica Mountains
What better place to hold mountain biking events than the scenic Santa Monica range overlooking the vast expanse of city below?
21 Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Studios will serve as the International Broadcast Center for TV crews broadcasting the games around the world.

Driveways That Go the Extra Mile

Don’t underestimate the lure of the open road. As landscape architecture becomes more important in home design, some homeowners are taking their driveway the extra mile.

Elegant tree allées become part of the architecture. Forks in the road are avenues for entertaining and for art displays. Winding turns can obscure a nosy neighbor’s view.

But appraisers say that building a long and pricey road to your door doesn’t always pay off at resale time.

Last year, 670 million square feet of residential driveway was laid for new homes in the U.S., according to Home Innovation Research Labs, an independent subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders. That figure is up nearly 80% from 2009, when the market was just recovering from the downturn.

The average length of a luxury driveway last year was 71 feet, the group said. Construction expenses can vary greatly by region, but remodeling site HomeAdvisor says gravel costs about $1.50 a square foot, high-end pavers about $15 a square foot. That doesn’t include landscaping or high-tech add-ons like hidden snowmelt systems, which can run about $25 a square foot.

In Solvang, Calif., a wine-country town in the Santa Ynez Valley, Steve Raftopoulos considers his driveway part of the architecture. His 6,574-square-foot modern mission-style home has an 800-foot approach road that begins with an 80-foot bridge overlooking vineyards and the Santa Ynez mountains. The chip-seal gravel road, a mix of asphalt and crushed limestone, is lined with 80 Italian cypress trees to match the rectilinear style of the home.

Designed by his sister Elizabeth Raftopoulos, the home and driveway were sited using feng shui principles. The road curves around the house; Mr. Raftopoulos and his family fish in the pond nearby. Completed in 2013, the 25-acre project cost $6 million, including land and construction—about 15% of which was dedicated to the road, pond and landscaping.

The home is now listed for $7.495 million. “It’s that panache factor,” says listing agent Sharon Currie, about the meandering drive, which she says can make or break a buyer’s decision before they see the home. Mr. Raftopoulos, a retired investment banker who started a Greek herbal-tea company called Klio, is selling because he spends more time at a Santa Barbara home and would like to start a smaller project.

Appraisers say driveways affect resale value, though the exact contribution is hard to measure. “You don’t wear a suit with a big ink stain on the front pocket,” says Michael Hobbs, owner of PahRoo Appraisal & Consultancy in Chicago, noting that shabby roadways can detract from the sales price.

Homeowners are paying attention to their surroundings. In a national survey of its members, the American Society of Landscape Architects reported that 81% of respondents saw stable or growing demand for work in the first quarter this year, much of it in residential projects. That is in line with the past two years and significantly higher than the same period in 2013, when 59.5% of firms reported the same.

Sometimes, real-estate agents explicitly pitch the driveway as a selling point. In the Beverly Hills post office area of Los Angeles, Lacey and John Williams are selling a 2½-acre double-lot property near Sunset Boulevard for $17.5 million. The two homes on the property, built in the 1920s, will almost certainly be demolished, says listing agent Ben Bacal of Rodeo Realty.

Until then, prospective buyers can admire the roughly 200-foot gated driveway surrounded by olive, lemon and palm trees, and blooms of plumbago flowers.

You would swear you’re in the middle of the jungle,” says Ms. Williams, 59, who is retired from a modeling agency. Mr. Bacal says a driveway of this length is unusual for the area and appeals to developers looking for privacy close to a major city hub.

The winding road is part of the sales pitch for Mr. Levin’s Stowe, Vt., compound. “It’s a bit of a magic show,” says listing agent Wade Weathers Jr. of LandVest. “The whole [ride into] the property is an event.”

Mr. Levin and his wife, photographer Petra Levin, bought the property in 1999 for $1.278 million and then spent years transforming the space into a family retreat with features like a minigolf course, a life-size chess board and trails for go-karting and snowmobiles.

The $5 million spent on landscaping and the driveway was just the start: Mr. Levin estimates spending $30 million on the property, including the home, an underground art gallery, photography studio and thousands of trees and shrubs.

Mr. Levin, former chairman of Gold Coast Beverage Distributors, acknowledges that, at $12.5 million, they are selling the home for far less than they put into it, but that his family enjoyed the compound. They are selling now that the children are grown.

Alan Wilzig, on the other hand, built a souped-up roadway to please his inner child. The ¼-mile driveway at his 275-acre property in Taghkanic, N.Y., detours onto a 1.15-mile, 40-foot-wide professional racing circuit.

Mr. Wilzig, 51, a semiprofessional race car driver and former bank chairman, built the Grand Prix track in 2010 at a cost of roughly $7.5 million—roughly half of the $15 million cost for the property. It can’t be rented for commercial use, limiting its ability to defray its cost.

To the average buyer, “one can say it’s a detriment” to devote so much space to the track, Mr. Wilzig says, but he says he uses it whenever he stays at the property. Although he lives in New York City, he hopes to move full time to his Taghkanic home by the end of the year to be closer to his children.

Should he decide to sell, though, he has his pitch: “What better place is there to teach your 16-year-old how to drive?”
